What is Surgery? Defining it & More

Surgery is a specialized medical or dental field which employs surgical instrument and operative technique on an individual to study or remedy a pathological condition like an injury or disease, to assist in improving physical function, visual appearance, or repair of structural lesions. Surgical technology has evolved greatly during the last century and it has provided a variety of choices for the treatment and prevention of many common human disorders and diseases. The word “surgery” actually means “the action of the mind beneath the body” and this branch of medicine mainly deals with the operations which involve the manipulation of the human body in order to carry out various functions like reconstructive surgery, cosmetic surgery, and preoperative surgery etc. It is also involved in the treatment of serious ailments like cancer and heart diseases. Surgical technology is very essential in order to provide an instant diagnosis and therapeutic treatment to any kind of disorder or infection. In the United States of America, surgery is one of the most common surgeries performed in hospitals.

Surgery as a branch of medicine has many definitions and variations which can be derived from different textbooks and discussions. According to the definition in Wikipedia, surgery is “the application of medicine to surgically alter organs or tissues by the use of surgical instruments, especially needles and surgical blades used to cut through the skin”. It should be noted that there are several definitions and views of surgery and medicine in other languages and countries. In Great Britain, it is defined as the surgical treatment whereby the functions of an organ are changed by the introduction of substances into the organ either by excision or by some type of local alteration”. It should be noted that the above definition of surgery has been adopted in accordance with the General Medical Council (GMC) which is an independent body of the United Kingdom. The definition of surgery in American Medical Association is “The process of operating on healthy human beings in order to provide a cure, repair or prevent harm”.

It is evident from the above definitions that a definition of surgery provides various methods by which it can be understood and judged. While talking points are an important medium for imparting information about surgery, it should be borne in mind that these talking points should not be taken as a definition of surgery. This is because of the fact that different people having different views may adopt these talking points as a definition of surgery. Hence, it is essential to take a step back from the process and focus on the content of the discussion. This will help to ensure that you are not misunderstood.

Another aspect to notice in a definition of surgery is that it talks about both surgery and recovery. Recovery includes both physical and psychological aspects of a patient. If the surgeon is able to successfully fabricate high quality surgical material, then the patient should be able to experience a high quality of life for a substantial period of time. Therefore, the very basic point of discussion in the definition of surgery is the need to maintain high standards of patient safety throughout the surgical process and post surgical care. These high standards should be maintained on all the aspects of the surgery so as to uphold high standards of patient safety and security.
